School

I have a chapter on school in my new book Is Everything a Scam?

Kids educated by people with no training and no credentials have higher grades, better test scores, and higher graduation rates. A simple internet or AI search shares these statistics without any censorship. My family assures me it’s the opposite, a child needs to be sent off with strangers and have their mind messed with for 12 years, and they definitely need to be injected with lots of aluminum.

The first week of sixth grade my son saw an 11 year old have a seizure, I mean it’s not like they have done experiments where they injected rabbits and monkeys with aluminum and they started having seizures. No, no, having a seizure is normal 11 year old stuff. Just like bullying and school shootings, it’s a natural part of the growing up process, nothing to see here.

I volunteered at a homeschool conference last weekend, saw wonderful people with amazing kids. Kids actually being kids and just being themselves. None of the kids had seizures, bullied each other, and nobody shot up the place. It was held in Oakland, CA which ranks the second most dangerous and crime ridden place in the US, Memphis just barely nudged us out of the top spot. Maybe we had an off year, or being at the Oakland Peace Center convinced homeschoolers to leave their guns at home.

My parents sent me to a small private school for 8 years and then I choose a government 4 year high school, then various government and private college classes (mostly to get my parents off my back, I didn’t enjoy or get excited about any of the classes, boring). Also I worked for my family’s small business for 27 years, a business that is inspected and regulated by the USDA. What I saw and learned was the contrast between a private organization and the government. The private organizations are far from perfect, but the rules and the boss were local and someone reachable. With the government the rules came from who knows where and for what reason. There was never any recourse nor anyone to contact at the USDA about changing things, sometimes we could change personnel but the rules themselves were far far beyond our reach.

I love learning when it’s something I am interested in or something practical I need to know to be able to do something I enjoy. I am a self taught master at computers, award winning video production, surfing, and wing foiling. It was only after I got out of the gov school system that I was able to pursue these with a passion. I devoted all my time and money to these “hobbies”.

During my first divorce I found 2 mentors (healing arts and martial arts) and learned how incredible the Master Apprentice system is. I devoured everything they showed me, I didn’t ask nor need to see any credentials or degrees. I put what they taught to the real world test, either it helped me or it didn’t. I still learn from them both now.

John Taylor Gatto was named teacher of the year and has a lot to say about schooling:

Class Dismissed is a wonderful homeschool documentary:
